Why "Finishing Strong" Doesn't Mean Rushing

DE - Dan Ekenberg
As we hit December, the noise tends to get louder. The commercials are brighter, the calendars are fuller, and there is this collective pressure to "crush" the remaining weeks of 2025.
But if you are here, reading this, you probably crave something different.
Living a simple life doesn't mean checking out of reality; it means choosing your reality intentionally. When we talk about "finishing the year strong," it shouldn't mean sliding into January 1st exhausted, burnout, and running on empty.
Real strength is found in the pause.
Here is how we can close the chapter on 2025 with intention and walk gently into 2026.
1. Redefine "Finishing Strong"
In the hustle culture, finishing strong means doing more. In a simple life, finishing strong means creating space.

Instead of asking, "What else can I cram into these last few weeks?" try asking, "What can I put down?"

Maybe it’s a project that no longer lights you up. Maybe it’s the expectation of attending every holiday gathering.

Maybe it’s just the mental clutter of worrying about the future. Give yourself permission to end the year by subtracting, not adding.
2. The Year in Review: Quality over Quantity
Before we look at 2026, take a quiet moment to look back at 2025. Don't look at the metrics—the money earned or the miles run. Look at the moments.
  • When did you feel the most at peace this year?
  • What was the simplest joy you experienced?
  • Which relationships made life feel lighter?
Celebrate those moments. Gratitude is the foundation of simplicity because it reminds us that we already have enough.
3. Setting a "Soft" Vision for 2026
Resolutions often feel rigid and punishing. They set us up for failure by mid-January. This year, I invite you to try something different.

Instead of a list of resolutions, choose a Theme or a Single Word for 2026.
Words like Presence, Nourish, Slow, Focus, or Connect.

Let that word be a compass rather than a map. If your word is "Slow," you don't have to overhaul your life overnight. You just have to ask yourself, "Is this decision helping me slow down, or is it speeding me up?"
4. Winter is for Resting
Nature doesn't bloom all year long, and neither should you. December is the beginning of winter (at least for many of us). The trees are bare; the earth is quiet. It is a season of dormancy and restoration.

Use these next few weeks to mimic nature. Rest. Read. Sit by the fire. Be present with your family.

Finishing the year strong means protecting your peace so that when the sun comes up on 2026, you are ready to greet it—not with a sprint, but with a smile.

Here’s to a simple, peaceful end to your year.
