There's no reason I should've seen him. He was the size of a quarter, a baby frog sitting on ninety-degree black asphalt, blending right in. I saw him out of the corner of my eye. I was just walking to the mailbox. Not a busy place, but there were cars, bicycles, maintenance golf carts, people out walking — any of which could've stepped on him and never known. Add to that ninety degrees of sun beating down on black pavement, and he didn't stand much of a chance on his own. So, I knelt down and tapped him until he hopped off the pavement and into the shade of a tree. Didn't take long. Didn't cost me anything. Wasn't heroic or impressive. Just a small thing for a small thing. But it stayed with me all day. Because I almost missed him. And because that tiny little frog, sitting on that hot pavement, had no way of knowing anyone was coming. But somebody was. We tend to think what matters has to be big — bold gestures, grand efforts, visible impact. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe the small stuff is just as important. We just have to be paying attention. Tiny Things DO still matter |
