Reclaiming Perfection: A Simple Approach to 2026

Motivational Monday blog post image featuring a dragonfly on a branch with the quote 'Focus on progress not perfection.' A reflection on simple living and finding meaning in the journey by Dan Ekenberg.
Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
As the final days of 2025 wind down, the air usually fills with talk of "fresh starts" and "new versions" of ourselves. With December 29th falling on a Monday this year, it feels like the perfect moment to pause and consider how we approach the coming year.
The dragonfly in this photo captures a certain kind of stillness, even though we know it is a creature of incredible movement and agility. It doesn't worry about whether its flight path is "perfect" by some external standard; it simply moves, adapts, and exists in the moment.
There is a lot of pressure this time of year to set massive resolutions. We are bombarded with images of what a "perfect" life should look like, often involving more clutter, more status, or more speed. But throughout my years of living in an RV and the miles spent solo on a bicycle crossing the country, I learned a vital lesson: the most meaningful progress is often the quietest.
Reclaiming Your Journey
Perfection is a trap, especially when it is defined by someone else. If we wait until conditions are perfect to start a journey, we’ll never leave the driveway. By waiting for a state of perfection before we allow ourselves to be content, we miss out on the quiet, authentic grace found in being a work in progress.
As you look toward 2026, I encourage you to reclaim the definition of perfection for yourself. To me, it has always been about simply living life and finding meaning in the journey, rather than the destination. Your progress doesn't have to be loud or life-altering to be valid. It might be as simple as choosing to slow down, breathing a bit deeper, or finally letting go of an expectation that never truly belonged to you anyway.
Don't let the world tell you that your goals aren't "big" enough or that your pace is too slow. Whether you are navigating the open road or the quiet corners of your own backyard, your progress is yours alone.

As we turn the page to 2026, let’s commit to simply living life and finding the true meaning in every mile of the journey.
With gratitude for the journey,
